In secular circles it's commonplace to discuss ongoing issues with the perspective that we are an accidental outcome of evolution.
The idea being, that decision making of humans are, at it's core, a desire to perpetuate our genes via the derived pressures of evolution.
As with most things it just feels like a cop out to avoid nuance.
Like saying I ate an entire hot-n-ready pizza in my car because we need nutrients to survive.
Assumed Efficiency
While evolution has been a dominating force of life on earth I think it's greatly misunderstood on why it's a commonly found pattern.
It's a truly simple “algorithm” that let's general life find it's niche. A good enough calculator only out done by accidents known as mutations.
However this is only possible due an incredible amount of energy. An unfathomable amount of years in conjunction with a very large explosion.
But hey it's not like stuff is gonna suddenly change for some reas—
Oops.
Constructed Pressures
While traditional pressures have gotten us to this point, it seems silly to suggest that it's always the root of modern decision making.
An example being contraception. While it is obviously a result of the desire to procreate, the actual incentive is the exact opposite of the “goals” of evolution.
The pressures of culture, society, capital are ever growing. Even internal forces, good and bad are being valued more and more. There are plenty of reasons not to be interested in your genes at this point in time. So why would we assume that we are simply abstractions of a monkey instead of a result of them.
We aren't writing the moral guidelines to have more children, but in spite of it.
Imitation as a Reaction
Despite all this it seems to be more commonly accepted then I would expect that evolutionary reasons usually get to trump ones derived from human constructs. From both people I tend to agree with and disagree with.
Could it be that traditional powers built off those forces that are more closely align with the pressures of evolution are feeling the structures shaking?
Those incentivized to gain power tend to want to keep it.
Whether intentional or not, if you're in a position that relies on traditional structures you'll likely assume that your decisions should be made on those original practices. Been good enough so far! The feelings you have must be in relation to the bottom of Maslow's pyramid.
Tying sex and power as it has been ordained.
Or maybe it's just easier to point to simple answers?
You're probably right. I should get off the computer.
Just hate a general solution in times of individual ideals.
